Family

When it comes to photographing family, I believe every moment is precious. Whether you’re planning a big family session or a simple gathering with your little ones, this blog will walk you through how to prepare for a photo shoot that feels joyful, calm, and full of natural smiles. From what to wear to how to keep the kids happy, I’m sharing everything you need to feel relaxed and confident, so you can focus on what matters most: being together.

Before we jump in, hello families! I’m Ashley, a Minneapolis family and motherhood photographer who loves capturing the beauty of real connection. My sessions are filled with movement, laughter, and honest moments that tell your story as it truly is. With gentle guidance and a heartfelt approach, I’m here to make photographing family feel simple, meaningful, and full of love. Reach out to learn more!

Before the Session: What to Do (and What to Let Go Of!)

Getting ready ahead of time helps set the tone for your session. Start by choosing a date and time that works well for your family. Try to plan around naps and meals so your little ones are rested and happy, because that’s when the best smiles shine through. If we’re shooting at home, take a few minutes to tidy up, but don’t stress about every little detail. A little lived-in warmth, a favorite blanket, or meaningful family pieces can make your space feel even more special.

What to let go of? Perfection. The laundry basket doesn’t have to disappear; your toddler’s mismatched socks can stay. What matters most is love and connection, not flawless backgrounds. If you’re meeting at a park, pack some extra layers in case the temperature changes. Take a deep breath and remind yourself: you’re here to love and laugh together, not to pose like mannequins.

Choosing the Right Outfits for Natural, Comfortable Moments

Now we turn to the fun part: what to wear! When photographing family, outfits play a big role in setting the mood. Choose clothes that feel like you. Soft colors, comfortable fabrics, and simple outfits work so well. Think about layers; maybe a cardigan for you or a denim jacket for your little one.

Here are a few quick tips:

  • Coordinate rather than match. Choose a color palette of 2 or 3 tones that work well together.
  • Avoid large logos or extremely bright neon colors; they can distract from those sweet expressions.
  • Consider the setting. At the beach? Light, airy pieces. In the woods? Earth tones feel beautiful.
  • Let each family member express a bit of their personality, perhaps with a favorite accessory or a unique pair of shoes.

When everyone feels good in their outfit, they’ll move more freely. That’s when the real magic of photographing family begins, the spontaneous hugs, giggles, and quiet moments that show who you truly are.

Session Day Essentials: What to Pack + Bring Along

On the morning of our session, I like to come with a joyful heart and some backup ideas. And I’d love for you to bring a few essentials too. It makes all the difference. Here’s a helpful little list you can tuck in your pocket:

  • A bottle of water for everyone, hydration helps if we’re outside or moving around.
  • A brush or comb for quick hair fixes, and a hairspray if a breeze might mess things up.
  • A change of clothes for the littlest one (or even the middle one), just in case of spills.
  • Some props, if you like: a blanket, a favorite toy, or a book for quieter moments.
  • A little tissue pack for runny noses, and a small trash bag if wrappers or water bottles pile up.

When photographing family, the smoother the day goes, the more relaxed you’ll be. And relaxed means beautiful, authentic expressions.

Trust the Photographer (That’s Me!)

Okay, friends, this is the part where you can take a deep breath and let me guide you. I know how much the little moments matter. The tickle under the chin, a bear hug from your child, the way you reach for each other’s hands. As your Minneapolis family photographer, I’m here to gently lead the way and help you feel natural and at ease. I’ll offer some direction, but most of the time, I’ll be watching for those in-between moments when your true connection shines.

You don’t have to try hard or act a certain way. Just be yourselves. That’s where the magic lives. If you’re chasing a toddler, I’ll chase right along with you. If your teenager needs some space, I’ll honor that too. My job is to find the heart of your story. When you trust me, photographing family becomes easy and meaningful. And when the session is over, you’ll walk away with more than just pictures. You’ll have real memories, full of love.

How to Keep Kids Happy and Engaged

One question I often hear is whether kids will stay engaged for the whole session. My family sessions are designed with movement, fun, and connection in mind. Here’s what helps keep things relaxed and enjoyable:

  • Sessions last up to an hour, but they’re not about sitting still the whole time.
  • We keep things moving with play, laughter, snuggles, and little adventures.
  • Toddlers and young kids aren’t expected to pose or stay in one spot.
  • Most children enjoy their time simply by being with their family.
  • The goal is to capture natural, joyful moments, not perfection.

This approach makes photographing family feel effortless and fun for everyone involved.

After the Session: What Happens Next

Once our time together wraps up, your heart might feel full, and your cheeks just a little sore from all that smiling and laughing! So, what happens after photographing family moments like this?

First, I’ll go through all the images we created together and select the very best ones. I’ll hand-edit each image to reflect the soft, light-filled, natural style you see throughout my work. Every photo in your gallery is edited with love and care.

Then, you’ll receive an online gallery filled with all the edited digital images, yes, all of them! There’s no extra fee for digital files from a full session. And if you’d like to turn your photos into prints or albums, you can order directly through your gallery. It’s such a beautiful way to bring your memories to life.

You’ll be able to scroll through your whole gallery, share it with family and friends, and choose your favorites to print, frame, or tuck into a keepsake box. These images aren’t just pictures; they’re your story, your connection, your family legacy.

These sessions aren’t just for capturing how you look; they’re for remembering how it felt to be together in that season. I feel so honored each time I get to step into your world and preserve these moments.

I hope this gave you the confidence to step into your next photo session feeling calm and ready. Photographing family can be simple and full of joy with just a little prep and heart.
