Indoor Photo Sessions for Cozy Minnesota Winters: What to Expect

Categorized In

Family

Indoor photo sessions are a beautiful way to capture your family during Minnesota’s long, cozy winters. When the temperatures drop and the snow piles high, staying indoors creates a calm, comfortable space to slow down and connect. Whether you’re cuddled up on the couch at home or stepping into a softly lit studio, these sessions let your family’s love take center stage, no winter gear required!

Hi families! I’m Ashley, a Minneapolis family and motherhood photographer who loves capturing cozy, heartfelt moments, especially during winter. If you’re ready for an indoor photo session that feels like home, reach out here, explore my portfolio, or come say hi on Instagram!

Why Indoor Sessions Are Perfect for Minnesota Winters

When winter in Minnesota is at its finest (or frostiest), we face chilly temperatures, short days, and sometimes unpredictable weather. Outdoor sessions can still be lovely, but they often mean layers, cold toes, and extra time for wrapping up warm. That is why indoor photo sessions shine in the winter months. Indoors, you’ll be warm, you’ll be comfortable, and we’ll have soft light even without the sun blazing.

Choosing indoor sessions lets us skip the jacket pile and focus on genuine connection. Your kids won’t freeze, your spouse won’t shiver, and your smiles will show up like magic. I love how these sessions become relaxed, intimate moments that feel truly you.

What Types of Sessions Work Best Indoors?

There are a few session types that are perfect for indoor settings. Here are some of my favorites:

Family Portraits

A full-family indoor session means laughter in cozy corners, kids playing, and big hugs on the sofa. For a Minnesota family photographer like me, this is a dreamy choice when it’s too cold to be outside for long.

Newborn or Baby Sessions

Tiny babies, sleepy heads, and soft blankets are ideal for indoor photo sessions. As a newborn photographer, I love capturing those first days in your home or in a studio, with calm, soft light.

Motherhood and Maternity

Expecting a little one or have a little one already? Indoor motherhood sessions are calm, cozy, and made for connection. I love creating a space where you can feel at ease and fully embrace this beautiful season.

Sibling or Milestone Sessions

Whether it’s a one-year cake smash, big sibling snuggles, or simply a “look how much you’ve grown” moment, indoor settings make the day smoother. Less weather stress, more joy.

Indoor photo sessions really shine when comfort and connection matter most. No matter the season of life you’re in, these sessions give us the space to slow down and focus on what matters: your love, your laughter, and the little moments you’ll want to remember forever.

At‑Home vs. Studio: What’s the Difference?

When planning indoor photo sessions, you have two lovely options: in your home or in a studio. Here’s how I help you decide.

In‑Home Sessions

At-home sessions feel deeply personal. We use your space, perhaps the sofa, a favorite rug, a light-filled window. I come to you, your world, your feel. You’ll be surrounded by the things you love: your blankets, toys, mug of coffee, and your story.

Studio Sessions

A studio session offers the same relaxed feel as an in-home session, just in a clean, styled space with beautiful light. While we may include a few more lightly posed moments, the focus stays on connection and comfort. It’s perfect if your home feels a bit busy or you want everything ready when you arrive.

How to Choose

Think about what feels most “you.” If you love the idea of cozying up in your own space, let’s stay home. If you’d rather step into a clean, styled space with beautiful light, the studio is a lovely option. Either way, the experience stays relaxed, connected, and true to your family.

What to Wear: Styling for Indoor Sessions

What you wear matters. When we’re inside, we see every detail: textures, colors, socks, little hands. Here are some styling tips:

  • Choose soft neutrals or Earth tones (cream, blush, soft grey, navy) to keep it light and airy.
  • Avoid loud logos or big stripes; they tend to distract.
  • Pick clothes that feel like you. If your kids are comfy, you’ll be, too.
  • Think layers: a cardigan, a scarf, a cozy knit. But avoid big, oversized jackets indoors; we want to be relaxed.
  • Shoes: Often barefoot or socks for family and baby sessions, which adds that extra feeling of home.
  • For maternity, consider dresses with gentle flow, or fitted tops paired with soft skirts. You are beautiful, and you should feel it.

Planning means your indoor photo sessions will look timeless and feel genuine.

I’m so grateful to work with the kindest families, and creating a relaxed, joy-filled experience is always my goal. Here’s what the Stengel family had to say about their session:

“We loved working with Ashley and Troy on our family photo session. They made us all feel so comfortable and relaxed and ensured that it was an enjoyable experience for everyone from beginning to end.”

How to Prep Your Space (for In‑Home Sessions)

If you choose an at-home indoor session, a little prep goes a long way, but I promise, we’ll keep it simple and fun. Start by clearing any clutter, like toys or extra items you don’t want in the background. We’ll focus on a space with the best natural light, usually near a large window, and I’ll help you find the perfect spot when I arrive.

Adding small, cozy details makes your space feel personal and inviting. A favorite blanket, a reading chair, a vase with greenery, or even a little stack of family books can make a big difference. If you have a clean rug or wood floors, those can photograph beautifully, too.

Letting your kids help gets them excited and involved. Something as simple as letting them choose a blanket or tuck a pillow can turn into a sweet moment of connection. And while we’ll be indoors and warm, it helps to check that the room we’re using feels cozy and comfortable for everyone. With just a few thoughtful touches, your home becomes the perfect backdrop for your family’s story.

What to Expect During the Session (Especially with Little Ones)

Let me walk you through how one of our indoor photo sessions will go. My aim: you relax, the kiddos move freely, and we capture hearts and smiles.

  1. Arrive & Settle In
We’ll start by getting everyone comfortable. A little snack, a hug, maybe a stretch. I’ll chat with you, and your little ones may explore.
  2. Warm‑Up Play
I’ll ask you to walk, snuggle, laugh, read a book together or tickle your little one gently. These non‑posed moments feel the most real and become your favorite photos.
  3. Capture Intentional Moments
We’ll then shift into more intentional poses: you holding baby, sibling hugs, mama gazing at her bump or her babe. I’ll guide you softly, no stiff “look here and smile”, just connection.
  4. Little Ones May Pause
With toddlers or babies, sometimes we pause. Maybe it’s story time, or maybe your little one finds a toy. That’s totally fine. We adapt. Indoor sessions give us flexibility.
  5. Finish With a Favorite Thing
I’ll often suggest ending with a cozy moment: lying on a blanket, everyone snuggled under one big throw, maybe a reading nook moment.
  6. Review & Wrap Up
At the end, you’ll feel warm, connected, and confident in what we’ve created. You’ll know that you were seen, that your family’s story was captured. And I’m so grateful I got to be part of it.
