If you’ve looked into family photos before, you’ve probably heard photographers talk about golden hour. You probably already know that sunset golden hour often falls right around your child’s bedtime, and immediately wondered if it’s really worth it.
I get it.
As a mom myself, I know how precious bedtime routines can be. I know how quickly a happy toddler can become an overtired toddler. And I know that when you’re planning family photos, the thought of keeping everyone up later than usual can feel stressful.
But after years of photographing families around Minnesota, I can tell you this: golden hour photos are almost always worth it.
There’s a reason so many of the images you see on my website were taken during golden hour. The light is beautiful, kids tend to settle into the experience, and families often leave saying they were worried for nothing.
Let me explain why.
Before we dive in, hi! I’m Ashley, a Minneapolis family photographer who specializes in documenting genuine moments between parents and their children. My goal is to create images that feel natural, joyful, and full of connection.
If you’re thinking about scheduling family photos, I’d love to chat with you. You can learn more about my family sessions or reach out to start planning your session.

If golden hour is new to you, it’s the time during the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset when the sun sits lower in the sky.
During this time, the light becomes softer and warmer than it is in the middle of the day. Instead of harsh sunlight creating strong shadows and squinty eyes, golden hour gives us a beautiful glow that photographs so well.
For family photography, that softer light helps create:
This is one of the biggest reasons I recommend golden hour photos whenever possible.
The light simply helps create the look that so many families love when they see their final gallery.
There is something special about the way children interact during golden hour.
Maybe it’s because the day is just starting, just winding down, or there’s less pressure to perform. Whatever the reason, kids often become more playful and connected during these sessions.
Some of my favorite moments happen when children are simply being themselves.
A little one reaching for mom’s hand.
Siblings giggling together over something completely unexpected.
A child running through tall grass.
Those moments happen all day long, of course. But when they’re paired with beautiful evening light, the images feel especially meaningful.
That’s why golden hour photos have become such a favorite for so many families.
The warm sunlight wrapping around your children creates an image that feels almost exactly the way the memory felt in real life.
Once you’ve picked the perfect session date, it’s time to think about outfits. If you’re wondering what to wear for family photos, I’ve created a simple guide with tips to help your whole family feel confident and comfortable.

This is probably the biggest concern I hear from parents.
And honestly, it’s a valid one.
No parent wants to deal with an exhausted child if they can avoid it.
The good news is that family sessions are relatively short. Based on my typical session experience, most family sessions last about an hour. We move through the session naturally and keep things moving so kids don’t feel like they’re standing still for long periods of time.
Children are often excited by the adventure of going somewhere new, exploring a beautiful location, and spending focused time with their parents.
A few things can help:
The goal isn’t perfect behavior, it’s joy and connection.
And that’s exactly what I photograph.

One thing I love about photographing families in Minnesota is that every season feels completely different.
That also means golden hour changes throughout the year.
Spring sessions often bring fresh green trees, blooming landscapes, and comfortable temperatures.
Golden hour arrives earlier than it does in midsummer, making spring a great option for families with younger children.
Summer gives us some of the most beautiful golden hour photos of the entire year.
The fields are lush, the evenings are long, and the warm sunlight creates that signature glow many families love. Sunset sessions can happen quite late during the summer months, which is why some families choose sunrise sessions instead. Morning golden hour offers the same beautiful light with cooler temperatures and often happier early-rising little ones.
Fall is one of the most popular times for family photos in Minnesota.
Golden leaves combined with soft evening light create beautiful golden hour photos that families often use for holiday cards and wall art.
Winter sessions offer a completely different look.
Because the sun rises later and sets earlier, both morning and evening golden hour can work well for families. Snow-covered landscapes reflect light beautifully and create a soft, bright feel that is unique to Minnesota winters.

One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that children need to sit still and smile at the camera the entire time.
They don’t.
In fact, some of the best golden hour photos happen when kids are moving.
I approach family sessions with flexibility and patience.
Rather than asking children to pose constantly, I encourage natural interaction and play whenever possible.
This might look like:
Children usually respond much better when they feel free to be themselves, which means the parents will feel more relaxed as well.
When everyone is having fun, the genuine photos will naturally follow.
Many parents worry about how their toddler will handle family photos. The good news? They don’t need to be perfect. Read my toddler photoshoot guide to learn how I create space for genuine moments, big feelings, and real connection.
If you’ve never booked golden hour photos before, here’s what you can expect.
We’ll meet at a planned location shortly before golden hour starts.
From there, we’ll spend time capturing a mix of family images, parent portraits, sibling interactions, and individual moments.
I guide families throughout the session, but I also leave room for genuine moments to unfold naturally.
You don’t need to worry about knowing how to pose, or your kids being perfect. You simply need to show up ready to spend time together.
Some of the most meaningful golden hour photos come from moments parents never planned.
A hug.
Laughter between family members.
A child reaching up for comfort.
Those are the memories you’ll treasure years from now.
If you’re looking for a Minneapolis family photographer who focuses on connection over perfection, I’d love to help you create those memories.

By the time families receive their gallery, the bedtime worries are usually long forgotten.
What remains are the images.
The way your child looked at you, or how your family laughed together, and the crazy season of life you’re living right now.
That’s why families continue choosing golden hour photos year after year.
The extra planning, the slightly later evening, and the small adjustments to the schedule often lead to images that become some of a family’s most treasured keepsakes.
As parents, we’re constantly aware of how quickly childhood moves.
One day we’re carrying toddlers on our hips.
The next day they’re running ahead of us.
That’s why I love creating golden hour photos for families, because they help preserve the magic and joy of a season that won’t last forever.
And years from now, you’ll be able to look back and remember exactly what it felt like.
If you’ve been considering family photos, I’d love to help tell your family’s story. Reach out today or sign up for my newsletter to learn more about booking your session and creating beautiful golden hour photos together.
