If you’re wondering when to book newborn pictures, you are definitely not alone. This is one of the most common questions I get from expecting moms, especially first-time parents who are trying to plan ahead while also preparing for a brand new baby.
There’s already so much to think about during pregnancy. Nursery plans, doctor appointments, baby showers, registry lists. It’s a lot.
As a Minneapolis newborn photographer, I take on a limited number of newborn sessions each month so I can give every family the time and care they deserve.
Hi, I’m Ashley, the creative mind behind Yantes Photo. I’m a Minnesota photographer who specializes in newborn, maternity and family photos here in Minnesota. My sessions are relaxed, baby-led, and focused on preserving this season exactly as it feels right now.

Book your newborn pictures during pregnancy. Ideally sometime between 20-34 weeks.
You do not need to wait until your baby arrives to reach out.
In fact, waiting until after birth can make scheduling harder because newborn photographers often book months in advance.
When you reserve your session ahead of time:
Before you know it, those sleepy newborn days are gone. That’s why I so often hear moms say how thankful they are they booked newborn pictures when they did.
Newborn pictures are a little different from family sessions because the timing matters more.
Most newborn photographers schedule sessions based on your due date first, then adjust once the baby arrives. Since babies rarely come exactly on schedule, photographers will maintain some flexibility around expected due dates.
That means calendars fill earlier than many parents expect.
I usually recommend reaching out sometime during your late second or early third trimester, or right after your anatomy scan.
That tends to be the sweet spot.
Booking early usually often feels less stressful as well. During the last few weeks of pregnancy, most moms are tired and uncomfortable already, and having newborn pictures planned ahead of time can feel like one less thing hanging over your head.
Wondering when to book your newborn session, whether to choose in-home or studio photography, or what to expect during those first precious days? This guide answers it all!

The ideal time for newborn pictures is usually within the first 7-21 days after birth.
That window works beautifully for a few reasons.
During those early weeks:
But if postpartum life feels overwhelming, please know you haven’t missed your opportunity for newborn pictures. There are babies who spend time in the NICU, moms who need extra recovery, and families who just need space to adjust after birth. These moments are still worth documenting.
I’ve photographed newborn pictures for babies who were several weeks old, and those sessions were still incredibly meaningful and beautiful.
Your baby does not have to fit perfectly into a timeline for these memories to matter.
This is probably the biggest reason moms hesitate to book newborn pictures ahead of time.
Babies can come early, due dates can come and go, and deliveries do not always happen the way we planned.
I promise this is already built into the process.
When you book with me, I reserve space around your due date instead of locking you into one exact session day months ahead of time.
Then, once your baby arrives, you simply reach out and we choose the final session date together.
This flexibility is completely normal for newborn photographers.
And as a mom myself, I truly understand how unpredictable birth and postpartum can feel. My goal is always to make this experience easier for you, not more stressful.
That means:
One of the biggest things moms tell me is how relieved they feel after booking newborn pictures ahead of time.
Because once your baby arrives, your focus gets to shift where it belongs. On your family.
After booking mid pregnancy, your due date is added to my calendar and I stay flexible around your delivery. Once your baby has arrived, you’ll receive preparation information and I will guide you through everything step by step.
You do not need to worry about your baby sleeping perfectly, your toddler cooperating every second, or your home looking flawless before I arrive. You also do not need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. That’s all part of my job. I gently guide the entire session so your newborn pictures feel relaxed, natural, and connected without adding extra pressure to an already emotional season.
And truly, some of my favorite moments happen in-between everything else.
The way your baby curls into your chest.
Tiny fingers wrapped around yours.
That sleepy little stretch they do after feeding.
The way new parents look at their baby without even realizing it.
Those are the moments I never get tired of documenting.
Do you feel like you need a little more information before booking? This blog has some great questions to ask before making that final decision!

I know how easy it is for moms to put themselves last during pregnancy and postpartum.
You tell yourself you’ll decide later, thinking maybe phone photos are enough and wondering if you really do need newborn photos.
But there is something incredibly special about existing in the memories with your baby, and documenting this season before it changes again.
Because it changes so quickly.
Tiny newborn stretches and little milk drunk smiles.
Wrinkly fingers wrapped around yours and how perfectly they fit in your arms.
It’s definitely fleeting, and you deserve to remember it.
If you’re expecting, I always recommend booking a maternity session so we can begin telling your family’s story before your baby arrives. Many families also choose to join my First Year Collective, which includes newborn, and milestone sessions throughout your baby’s first year. It’s such a beautiful way to preserve all of the little changes and moments that pass far too quickly.
If you’re looking for a Minnesota newborn photographer, I would truly love to help document this season for your family. You can learn more about me here and join my newsletter! And if you’re ready to start planning your maternity, newborn, or First Year Collective experience, reach out anytime. I can’t wait to hear your story and help you preserve these memories for years to come.
