What to Expect at Your Photo Session With Santa (A Stress‑Free Guide for Parents!)

Family

Stepping into your photo session with Santa should feel like unwrapping a little piece of Christmas magic. If you’ve ever braved the mall crowds or wrestled with wrinkled shirts and tiny tantrums, you know that holiday photos can come with a side of stress. But not here. This Santa experience is calm, cozy, and designed with your family in mind.

It’s hard to believe, but this will be my fifth year offering a photo session with Santa, and each year gets better. There’s something about the joy, the twinkle in little eyes, and the cozy, magical feeling that makes this season so special to capture. This year’s Santa sessions are happening on November 8th, and I can already feel the excitement building!

If we haven’t met yet, I’m Ashley, a Minneapolis family and newborn photographer who lives for capturing genuine, heart-filled moments. Holiday sessions, especially with Santa, are some of my absolute favorites. If you’re dreaming of holding onto that childhood wonder with beautiful, professional photos, you’re in the perfect place.

Let’s Talk Timing: How Your Photo Session With Santa Flows

Each photo session with Santa lasts 10 minutes, just the right amount of time to let the magic unfold without overwhelming little ones. We’ll take a calm, child-led approach, giving your little one space to connect with Santa at their own pace.

Here’s what you can expect from start to finish:

  • Settle In: We begin gently, giving your child a moment to take in the cozy surroundings and feel at ease. No pressure, no rush, just breathing room.
  • Santa Time: Santa enters, soft-spoken, kind, and ready to connect. Whether your child is shy or chatty, he meets them right where they are. He might tell a joke, read a quick story, or listen as they share their Christmas wishes.
  • Photos in the Moment: I’ll quietly capture all the sweet in-between moments, wide eyes, quiet glances, belly laughs, and tiny hands reaching out in wonder.
  • When Comfort is Needed: These sessions are just for children, but if your little is special needs or just wants to be held or supported by you to feel safe, that’s absolutely okay. Your presence is always welcome when it helps your child feel secure.
  • A Gentle Goodbye: Once the joy has been captured and everyone feels content, we’ll wrap up softly and send your family off with hearts (and cameras) full.

This photo session with Santa is about letting your child feel seen, supported, and full of wonder. Every part is designed to keep things relaxed and magical, so you leave with images that feel just as joyful as the experience itself.

Helping Littles Feel Comfortable and Seen

As a mom and experienced family photographer (hi!), I know the best photos happen when kids feel safe and seen. That’s why we move at their pace with patience and care. There’s no pressure, only gentle guidance and connection.

Santa is kind and calm, meeting each child exactly where they are during their photo session. Whether he shares a silly joke or listens, he has a gentle way of bringing out the quiet magic of the season in a way that feels natural.

Your child is never just a name on a list. They are seen and valued for exactly who they are. Every expression, whether joyful, curious, or unsure, is part of their story and deserves to be remembered.

What Should Kids Wear?

This is the fun part! Outfits should feel like a holiday hug, warm, playful, and comfy enough for little ones to move, giggle, and just be themselves.

  • Match without matching: Coordinating colors look lovely in photos, but there’s no need to go full uniform. Think cozy, classic tones that complement one another, like deep greens, cranberry reds, soft creams, or wintry blues.
  • Layer it up: Layers not only keep kids warm, but they also add texture and depth to your photos. A knit cardigan, soft tights, or a fluffy vest can elevate even the simplest outfit.
  • Embrace the festive: Pajamas with holiday prints, flannel button-ups, velvet dresses, or even fuzzy slippers all work beautifully. Whether you go traditional or playful, the goal is to reflect the magic of the season in a way that feels true to your child.
  • Keep it simple: Avoid loud logos, cartoon characters, or neon colors that can distract from your child’s sweet expressions and the soft holiday feel of the session.

Above all, choose something your child feels good in. When they’re cozy and confident, that comfort shows, and their personality shines through in every photo.

Capturing Real Connection, Not Just Smiles

You won’t find stiff poses or forced smiles during your photo session with Santa. I’m watching for the twinkle in their eyes when they first spot him. The way your toddler gently reaches for his hand, or the giggle that escapes when Santa pretends he forgot the reindeer’s names, those are the moments that matter.

It’s the little details, the movement, and the emotion that bring your gallery to life. A photo session with Santa isn’t just about getting the shot. It’s about creating memories you’ll come back to, year after year.

One of the things I hear most often from parents is how different this Santa experience feels compared to the hustle and noise of the mall. It’s calm, it’s cozy, and it truly brings the magic of childhood to life. Here’s what one sweet mama had to say:

“Calm, cozy, and truly magical. The best Santa pictures we’ve ever had. Pure childhood magic.”

Behind the Scenes: The Magic Touches You Won’t See in a Mall

Unlike a mall visit, your photo session with Santa is calm, quiet, and focused entirely on your child. The space is cozy, the lighting is soft, and there’s no crowd or rush, just space to breathe and believe.

Santa takes his time. He listens, shares a joke, reads a story, and meets each child with warmth and patience. With his real beard and kind heart, he makes the moment feel truly magical. It’s his favorite event of the season, and it shows.

You won’t notice the small adjustments I make or the subtle cues I share with Santa, but you’ll feel the difference in every photo. These sessions are child-led, thoughtfully paced, and filled with genuine emotion. When your child feels safe to be themselves, the magic naturally unfolds, and the photos capture every bit of it.

Love the calm, cozy feel of Santa sessions? That same peaceful, light-filled approach is what I bring to newborn photography, too. Step inside a studio session and see what it’s all about.
