Wondering what to consider before booking a newborn session? That first step can feel exciting and full of questions as you plan for your baby’s arrival. You want your baby’s first photos to be perfect. You want to feel supported. And you want memories that you will treasure forever. That is why it matters to ask the right questions before you book your photographer.

Why Asking Questions Matters Before You Book

When you schedule a newborn session, you trust your photographer with precious moments. You trust them to handle your tiny newborn with care. You want to know what to expect. Good questions help you feel calm. They help you find a photographer who fits your needs and cares about your baby. If you ask these 5 questions, you will feel more sure about your choice.

Question #1: What Type of Newborn Photography Do You Offer?

First, ask what type of newborn photography the photographer offers. Some photographers do posed newborn photos. They wrap babies, use props, and pose them on blankets. Others focus on lifestyle newborn sessions. They photograph newborns in their parents’ arms, on the bed, or during feeding. Some offer both.

Why this matters: You want photos that match your style. If you like soft, natural photos at home, a lifestyle session may be a good fit. If you like classic or artistic newborn portraits, posed sessions might be a better fit. Also, ask if they follow a safe posing style. A good newborn photographer will never force a baby into a pose. They will make sure the baby is safe and calm.

Question #2: How Soon Should We Schedule the Session After Baby Arrives?

It’s never too early to reach out about booking a newborn session! Most families contact me early in their second trimester to reserve their spot. This helps ensure availability, as my calendar can fill up quickly, especially during busy seasons. While I always do my best to fit in last-minute inquiries, planning brings peace of mind as you prepare to welcome your little one.

Most newborn sessions take place within the first three weeks after the baby arrives, with the ideal window typically between 5 and 14 days. During this time, babies are often sleepier and curl naturally, which allows for those soft, cozy images we all love. But every baby is different, and slightly older newborns can be just as beautiful to photograph, especially with those sweet, alert expressions. Once your baby arrives, send me a quick message, and we’ll secure your session date on the calendar.

Question #3: What’s Included in Your Newborn Packages?

Then, ask what’s included in the newborn session pricing. Each photographer offers something different, so it’s helpful to know exactly what you’ll receive before booking a newborn session.

Here’s what I include in every newborn session:

  • Up to 90-minute session in your home or in the studio
  • All edited digital images are delivered in a private, easy-to-use online gallery
  • No hidden fees, you receive your full gallery without having to choose just a few favorites

Why this matters:

  • Some photographers may charge a lower upfront fee, but only include a handful of images
  • Others might charge extra for digital downloads, editing, or including parents and siblings
  • Asking what’s included helps you compare options clearly and avoid surprise costs

If printed keepsakes or heirloom albums are important to you, be sure to ask if those are available, too. Knowing what’s included helps you feel confident and excited about preserving this special season.

Question #4: How Do You Keep Baby Safe and Comfortable During the Session?

This question is so important when booking a newborn session. It’s not just about getting pretty photos. It’s about care, comfort, and protecting your baby’s well-being. Ask how the photographer keeps your baby safe and warm. Do they use gentle posing methods? Do they clean blankets and props between sessions? Do they know how to respond if your baby wakes up, needs to eat, or needs a quick diaper change?

Also, ask about temperature and comfort. Is the room warm enough? Will they allow time for breaks? Will they listen if the baby is fussy or needs to be held for a moment? A thoughtful photographer will be happy to walk you through their process and safety practices.

As your photographer, this is always my top priority. I take a baby-led approach, follow your baby’s cues, and allow plenty of time for snuggles, feeding, and breaks. A newborn session should feel easy and calm for both you and your little one. You deserve a peaceful experience and beautiful memories to go with it.

Question #5: Can Parents and Siblings Be Included in the Photos?

When booking a newborn session, it’s also important to ask if parents and siblings can be included. For many families, these photos are just as meaningful as the baby’s solo portraits. Including your whole family adds warmth, connection, and a deeper sense of story to your gallery.

Here’s what to know about booking a newborn session with me:

  • Family is always welcome. I love including parents and siblings in your newborn session at no extra cost. These moments often become the most treasured images of all.
  • Timing matters. Family photos often work best at the beginning or end of the session, depending on the baby’s mood. We’ll follow your little one’s lead and make time for breaks, feeding, or soothing as needed.
  • I offer both in-home and studio options. Most newborn sessions take place in your home, where everything feels cozy and familiar. But if you’re concerned about lighting or don’t want to tidy up while you’re in the newborn bubble, I also offer access to beautiful studio spaces around the Twin Cities for a small rental fee.
  • I help guide the flow. You won’t need to worry about where to stand or how to pose. I gently guide you while keeping the session relaxed and natural, making space for sweet snuggles and genuine connection.

Whether we’re curled up in your living room or bathed in natural light at a studio, your session will feel easy, loving, and true to your family.

Bonus Tips for Booking a Newborn Session with the Right Photographer

Here are a few extra ideas to help you pick a good photographer for booking a newborn session.

  • Look at their newborn gallery. Check past work. Do their photos feel gentle and honest? Do babies look comfortable?
  • Read reviews or ask for references. Other parents’ experiences help you learn what to expect.
  • Ask about their experience. How many newborn sessions have they done? More experience usually means a smoother session.
  • Ask about backup plans. What if the baby or the mom is sick? What if the session needs to move? Good photographers have a plan.
  • Trust your gut. After you talk with the photographer, do you feel at ease? Do you like how they speak about baby safety and care? If yes, you are probably in good hands.

These little steps can give you a great sense of peace before booking a newborn session. When you feel confident in your photographer, you can focus on what really matters, soaking in those tender, once-in-a-lifetime moments with your brand-new baby.
